A teenager needed stitches in his leg after youths in a car hurled a large screwdriver at him.
Fourteen-year-old Naveed Karim, of Batley, was injured by the missile, which was thrown from a passing maroon Austin Metro car, as he walked home from school along High Street in Heckmondwike.
Police are treating Naveed's attack as racially motivated and are appealing for witnesses to contact them.
The Spen Valley High School pupil had just reached Heckmondwike Grammar School in High Street at about 5.15pm on Wednesday, when the screwdriver was thrown. It embedded itself in Naveed's right leg, just below the knee, and he was treated at Dewsbury District Hospital.
Police said the car carried four or five white youths, aged 15 or 16. The rear seat passenger had short, blond hair.
Naveed's brother Hafiz Karim, 27, said Naveed came home with trousers and a sock soaked in blood.
He said the incident had shaken Naveed badly.
Anyone with information, or who witnessed the incident, is asked to call Dewsbury police on (01924) 431059.
