Plans for 29 houses to be built on land which belonged to a Mirfield school have been refused by Kirklees Council.
Governors at Castle Hall School in Richard Thorpe Avenue had submitted a joint application with Miller Homes for the building of the homes and a sports hall, all-weather pitch, tennis/netball court and parking improvements at the school.
But at Kirklees Council's Heavy Woollen planning sub-committee meeting, the scheme was refused.
David Learmonth, headmaster at Castle Hall School, said: "We are continuing discussions with our partner, Miller Homes and are exploring every possibility." He said it was too early to say what their next step would be.
