Today we find ourselves involved in what is, in effect, a unique demonstration by the police of their confidence in the ordinary, law-abiding people of Bradford to do the right thing. We are publishing 20 images taken by special teams of police photographers or captured by CCTV cameras during the riots of July 7, and more will follow over the next couple of weeks.

They are of individuals the police are keen to trace. They need to know who the people in the photographs are so they can interview them. To help them in what is a mammoth task, they are asking Bradford people to name names.

The senior investigating officer for the city, Det Chief Supt Max McLean, believes that the present public mood will guarantee a good response. Let us hope that his faith is proved to be justified.

The vast majority of the many letters to us from all sections of the community have expressed outrage at the events of July 7, and anger that a small minority of people could have caused so much physical destruction and done so much damage to the good name of Bradford. That view has been firmly reflected in the stories we have carried.

There appears to be widespread determination that people of goodwill, who want to live harmoniously and within the law, should do all they can to reclaim the city and give it a sense of unity and pride.

Now is their chance to help to bring to justice those who did so much harm.
