Out-of-date food has landed a Clayton shopkeeper with fines and Court costs of £1,150.

Bradford Magistrates Court heard a pack of tuna and tomato bake and a pack of chicken curry were nine months and eight months respectively past their use-by dates.

The matter came to light earlier this year after the West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service received a complaint about Todays Super-market in Clayton.

When they visited on February 22 they found 14 items of food which were beyond their use-by dates.

These included packs of cheese, yoghurt and corned beef. Most of them were less than a month past their use-by dates.

But prosecutor Dennis Schulman told the court that three packs of cheddar cheese were 41 days out of date.

Tests revealed the chicken curry and the tuna and tomato bake failed to comply with food-safety requirements because both items were contaminated.

Sarwan Singh, trading as Todays Supermarket, Penny Hill Drive, Clayton, pleaded guilty to five charges of contravening food labelling regulations and two of selling food unfit for human consumption. He was fined £650 and ordered to pay £500 costs.

Singh, who owns the business, told the court he was under a lot of pressure and had asked someone to look after his store when he went to India.

He said that if he had known the food was out of date, he would not have sold it. He said he was sorry for the offences and promised it would not happen again.
