Police have sensationally released pictures of 20 men they suspect of being key players in Bradford's worst night of rioting.

Detective Chief Superintendent Max McLean released images of the men suspected of committing serious offences on the night of violence - Saturday, July 7.

Det Ch Supt McLean has by-passed the normal police channels in a bid to tap into the goodwill shown in the city in the aftermath of some of the worst violence seen on mainland Britain.

The pictures are from video footage and photographs shot by specialist police evidence gathering teams.

And police have guaranteed to release more images of suspectsin the future.

Bradford's senior investigating officer has assembled a specialist viewing team to sift through the 5,500 'stills' taken from footage captured by the police's video camera crews and various police CCTV cameras.

By putting his faith in the people of Bradford to come forward with information, he is echoing the sentiment of Chief Constable Graham Moore that Bradford is 'bouncing back'.

The total number of officers injured during the events which unfolded on Saturday, July 7, stands at 321.

Out of the 35 arrests made on the night, 28 people have been charged, five released on police bail, one cautioned and one convicted.

But the job of tracking down the hardcore of around 300 rioters said to be responsible for the riots which caused an estimated £15 million of damage is far from over.

Detective Chief Superintendent McLean said: "We've talked about the crimes committed by the few but witnessed by many - here's the first step to identify those few who brought Bradford to its knees on that night.

"For every single one of these images we have video footage of them committing serious criminal offences.

"These aren't just faces in the crowds, these are suspected offenders. All people have to do is fill in the names and we will go and arrest these people.

"We don't want any of these faces to remain anonymous to us.

"I would appeal to people who are on this posters to contact the police and give themselves up to avoid us having to get arrest teams in for them."

Giants posters with the 20 mugshots will appear in the district's police stations and on the police website.

And it will be displayed in Centenary Square tomorrow Sat, July 28 as part of the Target initiative with two officers available to take information from the public.

Det Chief Supt McLean said: "There does appear to be an air of goodwill in the city and it seemed to me that the best way to capture that was by early release of these images.

"The quicker we bring these people to justice the better it has to be for the city - there's no question of that."
