Skipton Town may have some of the best facilities in the Craven Football League but they are desperately seeking new blood and could fold if no-one comes forward.

The club will definitely start next season but if there is no response to their appeal for more committee members then Town, founded in 1948, could be disbanded.

Ironically, it is those facilities which now pose the danger to the club.

Town purchased their land at Sandylands and built new changing facilities but took on large debts and it is servicing those debts which is a problem for the club

"We have a committee of five but two are wanting to retire after many years of good service," explained spokesman Dennis Mayman.

"We are looking for anyone who wants to take the club forward, with new ideas and new blood. To be honest, it's quite a struggle thinking up new ways of raising money but there is potential as we probably have the best facilities in the Craven League.

"With hindsight buying the land and building the changing rooms might have been too much, too quickly."

Town runs junior teams at under-12, 14 and 16 level but Mr Mayman believes that too would disappear if the senior element folded.

"We know it's perhaps a vain effort because these days it's difficult getting people to do anything. People are reluctant to join anything. We do have three junior sides but they tend to run themselves and unless their son is involved, parents are not willing to get committed.

"If we do have to sell the club's assets, its ground, clubhouse etc, to pay off the debts the result would be the community would lose excellent sporting facilities for football and as the local authorities provide none, it would be a catastrophe for Skipton."

If anyone wishes to get involved in running Skipton Town FC, and Mr Mayman said anyone coming forward would get a lot of enjoyment, they should contact him on 793049.

Meanwhile Town's footballers are back in training for the new season. Seniors train on Monday evenings (contact Nick Irons on 01535 631604) and juniors on Tuesdays (contact Mr Mayman on number above).
