Champions Pudsey Congs have taken another big step towards retaining their Secure Trust Bank Bradford League Division One title by securing maximum points from the weekend's double programme.

They followed up Saturday's convincing nine-wicket win over relegation-threatened Bradford & Bingley by inflicting a 140-run defeat on Undercliffe yesterday.

Yorkshire's out-of-favour spinner James Middlebrook put Undercliffe to the sword. He made 102 in an opening partnership of 191 with Andy Bethel (79) and followed up with four for 26 as Undercliffe were dismissed for 137 in reply to Congs' score of 277 for six.

Congs now have a nine-point lead over Baildon who suffered a surprise two-wicket defeat at Yeadon on Saturday where John Roper took a stunning eight for 24 for the home side to dismiss them for 88.

Baildon's batsmen returned to form with a bang yesterday. They rattled up 262 for four in their winning draw against Spen Victoria and opener Simon Davies (149no) batted superbly to make the highest individual score of the season in the Bradford League.

A third centurion was Farsley's Chris Taylor who hit 119 not out as he helped his side inflict a second defeat of the weekend on relegation-haunted Gomersal.

For Farsley it was their first victory since May 28 and they were also indebted to a magnificent spell of bowling from their young spinner Neil Robinson. He took seven for 46 as Gomersal were dismissed for 172 and sentenced to a 95-run reverse.

The Division One newcomers had provided bottom team Brighouse with their first win 24 hours earlier.

Brighouse, who have had so little to cheer this season, powered to a nine-wicket success with Jamil Hassan(73no) and Zube Raje (67no) sharing an unbroken partnership of 133.

Sadly for Brighouse their joy was short lived. They went down by seven wickets at Pudsey St Lawrence.

Overseas star Tariq Azziz hit an unbeaten 85 for St Lawrence after Cameron Bailey had taken five for 43 as Brighouse were dismissed for 135.

Saints batsman Matt Thompson had caught the eye in the winning draw against East Bierley. He made 117 - his second century of the season.

Last summer Bradford & Bingley were involved in a last-match title decider with Pudsey Congs. This time it is the fight against relegation which is dominating their thoughts.

They gained just one point from their two matches and they had to cling on grimly for that against Cleckheaton in their second game of the weekend.

After being brushed aside by Pudsey Congs paceman Naveed Rana-ul-Hassan (5-58) on Saturday, they struggled against the spin of Cleckheaton skipper Paul Booth.

He took five for 78 and had Bradford & Bingley tottering at 183 for nine in reply to Cleckheaton's total of 206 for eight when their 50 overs ran out.

Booth had earlier top scored with 52 as Cleckheaton built a total of 206 for eight.

Hanging Heaton have retained their grip on third place with a winning draw against Farsley and a a comfortable seven-wicket success over Priestley Cup finalists Yeadon.

Left-handed opener Steve Bartle put his former Yeadon colleagues in their place by striking his season's best score of 96.

He was ably assisted by overseas star Ajit Bhoite who was unbeaten on 55 when victory was secured.

Hanging Heaton skipper Simon Purdy returned his best bowling figures of the summer as he took six for 52.

The promoted duo of Spen Victoria and Undercliffe fought out a fine match at Spen Lane on Saturday.

The home side squeezing home by three-wickets after Australian opener Grant Lambert (73) and skipper Steve Bethel (72) had given them the necessary impetus to overhaul Undercliffe's score of 230 for seven which owed much to the efforts of Toby Drummond (50) and skipper Martin Kellaway (52).

Lambert and Bethel attacked strongly and maintained a tempo which enabled their side to reach their target despite being put under pressure by Undercliffe's Pakistani Test bowler Mohammad Akram and promising young seamer Guy Saxton.
