A tip to handle waste from the new Bingley Relief Road has received the go-ahead from planners.

Shipley Area Planning Panel has approved plans to turn the disused Hallas Rough Quarry in Culling-worth into a dumping area for the 300,000 cubic metres of excavated waste which is anticipated from the construction of the new bypass.

Under the planning approval, the number of vehicle movements will be limited to 110 a day with wagons making a maximum of 55 trips in and 55 out of the five hectare site on Black Moor.

Lorries will go along the A650 to Keighley and then join the A629 Halifax Road.

But members of the Aire Valley Conservation Society claim the lorry movements will lead to greater congestion, pollution and noise for residents. They fear the development will have a devastating effect on people in Keighley, especially those living near Halifax Road.

Secretary Penny Ward said: "Halifax Road is congested enough. This is going to have a horrendous effect on residents' lives."

Quarry spokesman Dennis Gillson said: "This is the nearest available site to the road. There will be less traffic than if we took it to a different site."

Planners at Bradford Coun-cil say the length of tipping will depend on the road's construction - anticipated to take two to three years.

The site will be restored to moorland after the waste has been deposited at the site.

Planning officers claim this will remove an eyesore and could prevent off-road motorcyclists using the land.
