A political row blew up today after Council leader Margaret Eaton criticised some of the findings of Lord Ouseley's report into race relations in Bradford.

And opposition leader Councillor Ian Greenwood has called on her to resign as leader and as chairman of Bradford Vision following her article in a local government magazine.

In it, she said that in one respect the findings were "a sticking plaster applied to a grievous wound".

The day after it was published, she said it was "an honest and vivid report on race relations in Bradford".

And today she said she believed 97 per cent of the Ouseley Report was spot on, but that Lord Ouseley had said himself it was not the panacea to Bradford's problems. "We are taking the report a stage further. We are not disagreeing. It is a welcomed report."

But Councillor Greenwood said Coun Eaton should withdraw her remarks and step down from her two leading roles in the city.

And Liberal Democrat leader Councillor Jeannette Sunderland said she would be meeting Mrs Eaton today to discuss her article. She stressed that Coun Eaton was making her remarks in a personal capacity.

"She is not speaking on behalf of the Council. She hasn't discussed it yet with colleagues and the Council hasn't had the opportunity to debate the issue.

"I think at least she should have had the courtesy to mention it to her colleagues. She has not deemed to talk to us about it."

Councillor Greenwood said it came at the worst possible time when the city was still dealing with a sensitive situation following the Bradford riots.
