A 29-year-old man and a teenage boy have become the first people to be sentenced by the courts for offences arising out of disturbances in Bradford earlier this month.

The teenager, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon when he appeared before the city's Youth Court. Magistrates heard how a police officer was being pelted with missiles in Centenary Square when he saw the youth pick up a stone and put in his pocket.

The teenager later admitted he was going to throw it at the police because he "wanted to look good in front of friends".

But he said he did not know why he became involved and he regretted his actions. The teenager, who lives in the Holme Wood area of the city, was ordered to do 100 hours' community service.

Meanwhile, Gary Kent-Gayton pleaded guilty to threatening behaviour after magistrates heard how he hurled abuse at a police officer inside Addison's public house in Ivegate on July 7. He also threatened to attack the officer.

Mitigating, Glenn Chivers said that Kent-Gayton had been affected by a combination of medication and alcohol.

Kent-Gayton, of Wenbor-ough Lane, Holme Wood, Bradford, was put on a community rehabilitation order for 12 months and ordered to pay £40 costs.
