VILLAGERS are working their green-fingers to the bone in Burley-in-Wharfedale - as show time beckons.

Plants are being lovingly tended and secret incantations said over marrows and tomatoes to ensure success in the annual Burley Show.

People are hoping months of cultivating blooms or prize cabbages will be enough to ensure victory in the many categories, ranging from fruit, vegetable, produce and creative art.

Sue Vint, publicity secretary of Burley Gardeners Association, who organises the show, said: "We hope that we will get a really good turn out. In the last few years the number of people attending has increased.

We hope that will be exactly the same both in the number of people entering and the number of people attending in the afternoon."

Children are also being encouraged to put creative spirit behind village tradition.

There are many categories to choose from in the Junior section.

Youngsters can get snap happy and take photographs about 'Schooldays' or 'Holidays', make a party hat, create a miniature garden and much more.

Mrs Vint said: "Last year we had more children enter than we have had for a really long time. We are hoping for the same response again. The classes for children are open to anybody, not just children from Burley.

"We have got new classes for them this year. They are really fun."

Anyone interested should contact Angus MacIntosh, the chairman of the association, on (01943) 862750 for a full schedule or pick one up from Burley Library.
