Ilkley Ladies in

Robertson Cup

It was a lovely golfing day for Ilkley Golf Club Ladies in the first round of the Robertson Cup resulting in below par scores.

The standard scratch for the day went down to 72. The lowest gross in Division One was H Wilman's 80. First nett - P Blackburn 90-20-70; Second G Bean 91-20-71. Division Two - Judy Palmer 101-32- 69; Jackie Foster 92- 21- 71. Jackie also had the lowest gross in this division.

The Slazenger Trophy, the northern girls and intermediate close championships, was held at Preston Golf Club and the Ilkley competitors excelled. Ann Newman won the Slazenger Trophy with gross 75 both morning and afternoon.

Lizzie Brand had the best nett scores of 69 and 71. Lizzie's handicap is now 15.

The Yorkshire girls won both the scratch and handicap team trophies with Ilkley's two young members playing a huge part.

Ann Newman has been selected for Yorkshire's second team five times this season.

Bracken Ghyll

Golf Club

The first month of competition on the new 18 hole course at Bracken Ghyll, Addingham, has seen a marked increase in the number of competitors.

Club Captain Mick Tennant orchestrated Captain's Day in fine sunny weather. In recent years this event has been contested in rather poor weather conditions and this year made a welcome change.

The competition this year took the form of a Stableford competition and as usual competition was fierce.

Result - 1, Martin Edwards 40 (18), 2, Anthony Norris 40 (10), 3, Gary Oxley 39 (16), 4, Trevor Newman 39 (21). Straightest Drive on 8th - David Enion; Nearest Pin on 2nd - Terry Smith; Nearest Pin with 2nd shot on 15th - Robert Tankard.

July Mid-week Medal - 1, Tom Witherington 88 (18) 70; 2, Chris Naylor 89 (19) 70; 3, David Enion 91 (19) 72.

July Stableford, Division One - 1, John Bowles 42 (16); 2, Stuart Thomson 42 (15); 3, Terry Smith 40 (17); 4, Matthew Brook 40 (10). Division Two - 1, Kevin Smith 43 (19); 2, Russell Stead 42 (20); 3 Brian Carter 42 (28).

July Mid-Week Stableford - 1, Paul Binns 45 (13); 2, Chris Dodson 45 (28); 3, Keith Hindle 44 (24).

Bracken Ghyll Ladies' Invitation Day was played in strong winds and very heavy rain but after a good meal and the presentation of the lovely prizes all was forgiven.

First prize was won by Angela Moores and her guest, her twin sister. The July Medal was won by Jill Witherington 94 (33) 61 and Chris Knowles was second 98 (31) 67.

The Stableford played on the same day was won by Vicky Jordan with 44 points, with Jan Woods second with 40 points. The Birdwood Bowl was won by Chloe Walker 93 (29) 64 with Chris Knowles second 94 (28) 66.

Golf Club

BEN Rhydding Golf Club Captain Stuart Yeadon held a Captain's Week in July.

On Saturday July 14 it was Club Captain's day for juniors. The competition was a stableford and a good turnout was blessed with good weather.

Division One - winner Chris Pearce 38 points; 2, Peter Hibbert 36 points; 3, David Firth 34 points; 4, Chris Stone 33 points.

Division Two - winner Oliver Watson; 2, Edward Cohen; 3, Mathew Stainforth; 4, Charles Wood.

There were three 'twos' - David Firth, Chris Stone and Junior Captain Ben Fowler.

The prize presentation was followed by a buffet lunch.

Wednesday was Club Captain's Day for ladies. It was another good turnout, although the rain ceased it was extremely windy making conditions difficult. The competition was a stableford off 7/8 handicap. The winner with an excellent score of 39 points was Janette Mullen who also collected the prize for longest drive. Second was Pauline Lee 34 points and third was Helen Sefton 32 points. Nearest the pin - Sue Towler. The prize presentation was followed by afternoon tea provided by the captain and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The week came to a close on Sunday July 22 with Club Captain's Day. Over 80 members played a stableford off 7/8 handicap in two divisions. Played in breezy conditions it did not stop the winners producing some excellent golf. The prize presentation was held in the clubhouse with the Captain's wife Lynn Yeadon presenting the prizes.

The Captain also thanked everyone for the help and support that he had received. Captain's Prize for 2001 went to Tony Atkins with an excellent 40 points. Divisional winners were: Division One - Phil Kendall 39 points, runner up Malcolm Parker 37 points. Division Two - John Sheldon 38 points on last nine, runner up John Hartley 38 points. Longest drive - Darren Procter; nearest the pin -Malcolm Parker. There were also nine 'twos'.

A raffle was held for the Captain's Charity, Take Heart, and the evening was rounded off with the traditional Ben Rhydding barbecue.

AT Horsforth Golf Club a men's club stableford was played in conjunction with the Rabbits Diamond Jubilee Competition. Stableford, handicaps 1 - 15: 1, D Mortimer (14) - 46; 2, S Penistone (12) - 44; 3, J Kershaw (14) - 44.

Rabbits Diamond Jubilee, handicaps 16 - 28: 1, N Kemp (19) - 49; 2, J Glover (20) - 45; 3, D Coverdale (19) - 44.

Ladies two round eclectic Connie Leech Trophy, a two round competition with the first round being an extra medal. Division One: 1, B Wallace (11) 64; 2, J Greenwood (16) - 70; 3, J Howson (17) - 71.

Division Two: 1, J Allan (21) - 73; 2, N Beck (21) - 74; 3, V Horsfall (25) - 76.

Division Three: 1, N Spence (32) - 68; 2, J Rothwell (37) - 69; 3, J Walker (31) - 70.

Connie Leech Eclectic: 1, S Cage 71 - best back 9; 2, J Howson - 71.

The Griffin Trophy Qualifier was played on Sunday as a Foursomes Medal with 16 couples entering. Results: 1, M Scott and J Scott 86 (20.5) 65.5; 2, A Greenhalgh and C Greenhalgh 79 (12) 67. Best back nine; M Freeman and H Freeman 94 (27) 67. Two couples qualify to play in the final at Howley Hall in September.

St Dunstan's Cup

ON Saturday 141 players took advantage of the good weather, competing for the St Dunstan's Cup. There was a bit of run on the ball helping 12 players to reduce their handicaps.

The winner was Paul Darby, who, playing off HCP returned a nett 62.
