A popular Keighley woman who survived life in a Japanese prisoner of war camp will celebrate her 90th birthday next week.
Ana Elena Reddish will toast her milestone on Monday and will be joined by family and friends for a party at her home on Sunday.
Ana, who was born and raised in Gibraltar, spent four years' in Stanley POW camp on Hong Kong with her husband Cecil, who was an inspector in the Hong Kong police.
Not only did she manage to survive the ordeal, Ana also gave birth to her daughter Veronica while incarcerated.
After they were freed from the camp the couple was evacuated to New Zealand and from there they returned to Hong Kong before starting afresh in England with Veronica and their two other daughters Ngaire and Janine.
Last December Ana finally received £10,000 compensation from the British government in lieu of the suffering the couple was put through.
Unfortunately, Cecil was not around to benefit from the compensation. He died in 1964 aged 54 from TB, which was linked to the deprivation he suffered in the camp.
More recently Ana was interviewed for a Radio 4 programme about her experience in the camp, with an actor reading excerpts from her husband's diary.
Ana has made annual trips back to Gibraltar to see relatives but has had to curtail them in recent years due to ill health.
"I think it's important to eat well and be happy," she says. "It's good to have a sense of humour and sometimes let thing in one ear and out of the other.
Daughter Ngaire, who lives in Stainforth, adds: "Mum has always been very independent and is a very mentally strong person because she had to be to survive the camp."
Ana will be joined on Sunday by Ngaire, Veronica, who lives in Oakworth, Janine, who lives in the Fell Lane area, her seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
