A Keighley mother is campaigning for road safety measures to be introduced on a busy street after a young boy was injured in a road accident.

The six-year-old was hit by a car last Friday when he ran across Arctic Street to reach a children's play area.

Now Andrea Walker and other concerned Beechcliffe residents are gathering a petition to urge the council to install speed humps on the 'rat-run' and a protective barrier next to the playground.

Children have to cross Arctic Street to reach the Beechcliffe play area and parents are worried about their safety.

The boy's mother, who doesn't want to be named, is campaigning with Andrea for the speed humps to be put on Arctic Street.

Andrea, from Ethel Street, said: "The boy ran across the road and a car struck him, he was a bit shaken but he was fine, but next time a child might not be so lucky."

"Arctic Street is fairly busy a lot of cars use it as a rat-run from Skipton Road. There have been quite a few children injured on the road over the years and we want something done to slow the traffic.

"We have started a petition to try and get Bradford Council to put speed humps down.

"When it's the school holidays and the children are trying to cross the road to get to the play area it's very dangerous for them. We need something doing before a child gets killed."

The 34-year-old added: "Young children don't have road sense and the cars need to slow down, they see the playground and don't think about looking when they get to the road.

"You cannot expect young children to come across the road it's too dangerous."

The Beechcliffe residents successfully petitioned the council in 1993 when they were granted the £13,000 new Arctic Street play area.

They had campaigned for the playground to provide an area for their children to keep them off the streets after a few children, including Andrea's daughter, were injured in car accidents.

Before 1993 the children faced a perilous journey of having to cross Skipton Road to get to the Cliffe Castle play area.

Now Arctic Road has become a lot busier as drivers use it to avoid Skipton Road and parents are once again concerned about their children's safety.

Owner of Beechcliffe stores Paul Heseltine said: "Young drivers are using Arctic Street as a race track.

"It's only a matter of time before a child is killed. There are so many near misses each week. Every time Skipton Road floods they divert the traffic down here and it's dangerous for the children."
