Patients of a former Pudsey GP have been told they have two weeks to find a new family doctor.

Dr Peter Lindsay, who practised at The Robin Lane Medical Centre in Pudsey until the partnership was dissolved, has been unable to find suitable accommodation to work from. His 1,100 patients have now been told by Leeds Health Authority they have less than two weeks to register with a new GP.

Dr Lindsay, 48, was arrested by West Yorkshire Police in January amid alleged professional irregularities concerning the prescription of diamorphine - the clinical term for heroin. A police investigation cleared him of any wrong-doing.

Dr Lindsay was also subsequently cleared of any wrong-doing by the General Medical Council who stated that he had been "badly treated" by Leeds Health Authority.

However, Dr Lindsay, who has always been supported by his patients, has been unable to find suitable accommodation to return to work in Pudsey.

Mike Ramsden, chief executive of Leeds Health Authority, said it was not possible to continue with current arrangement for Dr Lindsay's patients. He said: "At the turn of the year his former partners dissolved the partnership at Robin Lane. From that time patients have been treated by a locum at The Gables, in Swinnow Road, Pudsey. That arrangement will come to an end on August 15. The premises are not designed for that level of patients."

Mr Ramsden said that despite a number of discussions with Dr Lindsay and the assistance of a firm of property consultants, they had failed to find premises in Pudsey.

"Patients will not find themselves without a doctor," he added.

Dr Lindsay today said he remained convinced Leeds Health Authority had misused its legal powers, failed to keep his patients informed and made no effort to re-establish a partnership which had been destroyed.

"I am now working as a locum in other areas around Leeds," he said.

The patients will be absorbed by Robin Lane Medical Centre, Sunfield Medical Centre, Stanningley, Hillfoot Surgery, Pudsey, The Gables, Pudsey, and Pudsey Health Centre.
