A man jailed for taunting police during the Bradford riots has been granted bail pending an appeal against the sentence.
On Tuesday, 23-year-old Aftab Wahid became the first person to be jailed in connection with the disturbances after the city's magistrates heard how he challenged a police officer to fight him.
During a confrontation in Bradford city centre, Wahid approached the officer in an aggressive manner and told him that he hated them all.
Wahid, of Dorset Street, Little Horton, was jailed for 28 days after he pleaded guilty to a charge of threatening behaviour, but his solicitor immediately lodged a notice of appeal against the sentence.
The magistrates refused to grant Wahid bail, but when a further application was made before Judge Gerald Coles QC at Bradford Crown Court yesterday he decided to release him, pending the appeal hearing.
But Judge Coles made it a condition of Wahid's bail that he lives at an address in Rochdale.
It is understood the judge granted bail because it would have been impossible to hear his appeal before he had served the sentence imposed by the magistrates.
During the magistrates' hearing, Wahid's solicitor, Javid Arshad said he accepted using threatening or abusive words towards the officer but now apologised for his behaviour that day.
