Chart-toppers Steps are to perform a free concert in Bingley as a present to the Bradford district in the wake of the riots.

The fab five - Claire, Fay, Lee, Lisa and 'H' - will be strutting their stuff on the stage in Myrtle Park on Sunday, September 2.

Best known for their hits Tragedy, Deeper Shade of Blue and Here and Now, the pop sensations will also be giving fans an exclusive preview of their new single Chain Reaction, due for release in the autumn.

They will headline the fourth annual Pulse Party in the Park - a free weekend which is geared to younger music lovers.

Council leader Councillor Margaret Eaton said: "It's a nice gesture by such a young and popular group to perform for free.

"Clearly this music weekend has established itself as one of the North's biggest free outdoor events."

The bill will also feature the cream of up-and-coming bands.

Last year Madison Avenue, Lolly, Dum Dums, Super Sister and Sweet Female Attitude were among the 14 bands who performed to thousands of ecstatic fans.

On Saturday September 1 - the day before this year's Pulse Party in the Park - Myrtle Park will be the setting for Music at Myrtle, featuring four bands covering four generations of music.

Topping the bill will be the 1970s Eurodisco supergroup Boney M featuring lead singer Liz Mitchell.

The band enjoyed major success with record-breaking hits such as Rivers of Babylon, Rasputin, Brown Girl in the Ring, Sunny and Daddy Cool.

Bingley band Redd will get the show off the ground at 5pm and promise to get the crowd rocking to covers of numbers by today's top artists, including Robbie Williams and S Club 7.

Nab Wood's Rock Solid will be taking a trip down memory lane and performing rock 'n' roll hits from the 1960s to the present day.

And Bee Gees tribute band Bee Gees Magic will perform a 60-minute show featuring Stayin' Alive, Night Fever, Tragedy and many more hits.

The evening's entertainment will finish with a spectacular firework display.

Since first being established by Bradford Council 11 years ago, Music at Myrtle has grown into one of the most successful free music events in the region and attracts about 30,000 music lovers.

Four years ago it joined forces with Pulse FM to cater for younger fans as well.

The Council's project and events officer Andrew Wood said: "It will be a fantastic weekend and there's something for everyone, young and old."

This year's theme - 'Keep it safe for the Kiddies' - sees the introduction of a no-glass policy.

The footbridges connecting Myrtle Park will be closed from noon, Saturday, September 1, until noon on Monday, September 3, as will Riverside Walk alongside the park for safety reasons.
