A trader who had £35,000 of mobile phone accessories stolen during the third raid in months at his shop wants more police on patrol.

And Yusuf Mayet, manager of Mobile Talk in Birstall, warned that crime could drive him out of the town.

"This is the third time we have been burgled since we opened in Birstall in April and it is not worth our while to stay if this keeps happening," said Mr Mayet, who also has branches in Dewsbury and Batley.

"During the first two burglaries about £6,500 of stock went. We didn't claim for those because we thought the insurance company would decline it or refuse to insure us again," he said.

During the first raid, in April, burglars entered by smashing a back window. After window locks were put on, burglars struck again a week later and pulled the locks out. The latest incident happened between 1am on Sunday and 7am on Monday.

"This time, we are only covered for £4,500 of stock - stuff like accessories, hand sets and SIM cards," said Mr Mayet.

"We will have to pay the rest and start again from scratch. We had only been in here two weeks when we got done over the first time. A week later the local bridal shop and bakery were also done. There is no police presence here at all. The only way of keeping business in Birstall is to increase police presence."

But a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Police regularly patrol the Birstall area and work hard to reduce crime.

"People may not always realise that officers are always analysing crime patterns behind the scenes to target specific operations towards tackling local problems.

"We would encourage the public to continue to act as eyes and ears for the police by passing any information to officers."

Mr Mayet said most of the expensive phones were kept in three time-lock safes in the basement. Police said the burglars had visited the safes but had not got in. "We can't even put a roller shutter on the shop because it is a listed building," said Mr Mayet.
