Matlock Town 0

Guiseley 1

LADY Luck for once smiled on Neil Parsley's men - David Cooke of course excepted.

Their Friday night trip to Matlock produced three valuable points and it was that man Simon Trevitt who scored their goal.

Defender Trevitt is now joint leading scorer with Mark Stuart but the agony goes on for Cooke who doesn't seem able to get he ball in the net whatever he does.

Trevitt on the other hand could have had a hat-trick in this game with one shot scraping just wide of the post and another header going close.

Parsley's squad was stretched with Clive Freeman at a wedding, Andy Shuttleworth working and Dave Henry, Ryan Senior and Gary Strodder still on the injured list.

Midfielder Peter Sumner showed the right spirit however by taking an afternoon plane back from working in Frankfurt to join with his team mates for the trip into Derbyshire.

Sumner has been a solid addition to the first team squad and he is starting to get forward and get in some of his famed long range shots as well as some telling defenive tackles.

Guiseley applied the early pressure and Cooke had a header pushed away for a corner. Young goalkeeper John Lamb took some good shots in his stride and at the other end Kevin Newhouse used his pace to force an opening. Cooke and Mark Stuart had shots blocked before Cooke had another good effort saved.

The interval was reached without any score but early in the second-half James Nettleton almost opened the scoring for Guiseley when he rolled the ball goalwards and it was cleared off the line.

Trevitt however needed no second chance when Mark Stuart hoisted his corner over in the 51st minute and he headed home.

Matlock were always in the game and indeed the result could have gone either way with the home side rattling the woodwork. Simon Phillips blocked a shot from Simpson and Lamb tipped another effort over the bar as Matlock stepped up the tempo but at the other end Trevitt put his header just over,.

With the ball in the net Will Davies was booked for a foul on the Guiseley 'keeper and the referee ruled the effort out. Steve Charles then left the goals rocking when his shot hit the inside of the post and bounced out.

Parsley's men have needed a bit of luck and tonight they got it but deservedly so.

l On Saturday Guiseley entertain Ossett Town and will be looking to avenge a 3-0 defeat suffered just a few weeks ago.

Guiseley Reserves 3

Southport Reserves 1

GUISELEY Reserves gave another fine performance to go joint top of the Lancashire League after this win over Conference club Southport.

Guiseley have now netted three goals against the three teams with the best defensive record in the league - Morecambe, Chester City and Southport.

Leading scorer Lee Reilly put them ahead with his tenth goal of the season. Andy Shuttleworth soon made it 2-0 and they took that lead into the break.

When Craig Bower drove the ball in to make it 3-0 the writing was on the wall for Southport.

Cory Larkin tripped a Southport player and a penalty was awarded but young goalkeeper Tom Morgan made an excellent save at the foot of the post.

Southport did however get a goal back late in the game.

l Guiseley Reserves travel to Colwyn Bay on Saturday and the following Saturday travel to Horsforth St Margaret's in the Wharfedale FA Challenge Cup (2 pm).
