JOHN J Sefton, Keighley's head postmaster for 10 years from 1958 and known by his colleagues as 'the postman's friend', stands on the right after presenting an Imperial Service Medal to long-serving Cross Hills postman Thomas Jackson in 1960.
The photo was supplied by Neil Cathey, of King Street, Silsden, who names the others in the group as, from left, Jim Anderson, assistant head postmaster at Keighley, Bill Gadsby, a Cross Hills postman, Ernest Pugh, sub-postmaster at Cross Hills, Mrs Thomas Jackson and her husband, and Cross Hills postman Ronnie Harrod. It was taken in Cross Hills post office. Mr Cathey recalls how at that time "sub-post offices like Cross Hills and Silsden had a sorting office and postmen attached to them, with all local deliveries done from there.
"Cross Hills had six postmen delivering to Cross Hills, Glusburn, Eastburn, Sutton, Cononley and Lothersdale, whereas Silsden had five and covered Silsden and Silsden Moor, Kildwick, Farnhill and Bradley."
