A lottery is being launched in a Bradford village in a bid to preserve a community green.

Villagers in East Morton are being urged to join a monthly numbers draw to win cash with proceeds going towards the £1,200 annual maintenance of the village green.

The 100-Plus Club, to be launched on October 16, is the brainchild of resident Karen Redhead, a mum-of-two who is keen to save the garden for future generations.

"Every household in the village benefits from having an attractive village centre so we hope everyone will do their bit and purchase one, or hopefully more, lucky numbers," she said.

"It's a lovely spot and it would be a shame to lose it. I heard the Village Society was struggling to pay the monthly fees and thought 'why not set up our own lottery?'.

"That way we can all benefit from the green and have the chance of winning something."

Mrs Redhead was given a licence to run the scheme by Bradford Lotteries based at City Hall, Bradford.

The Village Society took on responsibility of paying for upkeep of the green when it was established on the site of the former junior school in the 1970s. It rents land from Bradford Council for a nominal fee and foots the maintenance bill.

Society chairman David Miller said: "A group of people with disabilities come every month from Skipton to keep it neat and tidy. It's our green oasis and we want to keep it that way."

Residents can buy a number at £1 each. A draw will be made on the third Tuesday of the month in the Busfield Arms pub. There will be prizes of £25 to £100, and a jackpot of £150 to be drawn on gala day in July. Entry forms are available from the post office in Main Road and the Busfield Arms.
