IAN HOLMES is aiming for his third Yorkshire fell running title when he takes part in the Withins Skyline Race tomorrow.

Holmes first won the title back in 1994 and clinched his second champioship in 2000.

This time the event is on his home ground, but he will face strong competition from local rivals Jon Taylor, Siggy Gould and Robert Jebb, all members of Bingley Harriers.

Victory would also give Holmes his fourth win in the Withins race, which starts from Penistone Hill country park near Haworth. Last year he slipped coming off Top Withins and had to be taken to hospital with a knee injury. Clubmate Robert Jebb sacrificed his own chances of victory by helping his rival off the hill.

This time they will be locked in battle for the county championship crown.

Bingley are hot favourites for the men's team title.

Both the 1999 and 2000 women's winners, Helen Johnson and Tracy ambler, are competing, with Tracy celebrating her 38th birthday during the weekend.

There are gifts for all finishers and goody bags for all young athletes in the junior events.

Junior races start at 10.30 with seniors at 11.30. Entries will be taken on the day and more information is available from Dave Woodhead on 01535-669100.

The Bronte Way goes ahead on Sunday starting from Wycoller at 11am.

The winner should be back at the finish outside the Fleece Inn, Haworth, in less than an hour.

Entries are being taken on the day, but transport from Haworth to the start is virtually booked up.
