THE Craven Herald has been making the golfing news this week as well as reporting it, (writes Tony Simpson).
Peter Ellwood was the winner of Skipton Golf Club's Craven Herald Trophy, the knockout tournament for eight to 15 handicappers, while Herald editor Ian Lockwood was setting too hot a pace for his rivals as he won the monthly medal by a four-shot margin.
Finals can often turn out to be mediocre fare, as both players struggle to overcome nerves, but the eight to 15 showpiece turned into a "cracker" as Ellwood and opponent Steve Aldous threw birdies at each other and played below their handicaps.
The winner had four birdies en route to a two up victory.
Lockwood was the winner of the September medal with a gross 71 nett 63. Despite being behind trees twice on his round and having to chip out sideways, he rectified those errors with birdies on the 16th and 18th.
Four shots back in second and third places were George Myles, 79-12-67, and Jim Dawson, 81-14-67.
Keith Bottomley was the second division winner with a nett 66 off his 19 handicap, a good score considering he notched up three double bogeys and a treble bogey from holes 13 to 16.
