The company which objected to Tesco's plans for a supermarket in Cleckheaton has submitted an application for a superstore in the town.
Magellan Properties of Grantham House, Laisteridge Lane, Bradford, has submitted an outline application to Kirklees for the building of a 5,650sq m superstore and car parking on land at Bradford Road/Horncastle Street/Serpentine Road/Northgate/Scott Lane in Cleckheaton.
A decision will be made by the Heavy Woollen Planning Committee, but not before October 19.
At the public inquiry into the Tesco application in July a Magellan representative gave evidence on behalf of the company, which was promoting the alternative site in the town.
He said customers of the existing Tesco store would be drawn to do their shopping in the new store and would find less reason to visit the town centre. He said as a result, this would lead to a decline of retail outlets in the town centre. He felt it very likely that the alternative site suggested by Magellan would be taken up by a superstore owner.
At the inquiry, Magellan produced a letter from Asda which said their new site offered 'very real opportunity for a new food store' in the town.
But Tesco chiefs branded the plans 'unrealistic' and said: "Writing a letter is a cheap way of trying to see off potential competition."
A decision from the planning inspectorate on the Tesco application is expected in the next two months.
