Children at a Bradford school have recorded a CD for world peace.

The youngsters at St John's CE Primary School were invited to perform on the charity record, which will be marketed worldwide via the Internet.

The Tong Street school's 40-strong choir recorded two songs - Together We Stand by Jon Coulter, who had the original idea for the CD, and Children Want Peace by Sheila Wilson.

Dorothy Walton, performance co-ordinator, said: "It's so nice to be chosen for this - the children are really excited."

Pupils recorded their own CD last year with the help of Mr Coulter's recording company, Shipley-based SR Mobile.

So when he needed a school choir to sing his song he immediately turned to them for help. The piece was arranged by Dave Mawson, piano teacher at the school.

Mr Coulter said: "I had the idea of doing a charity record for Children in Need a long time ago but with the events of September 11, I decided suddenly that this year might be the time to do it.

"I contacted St John's School because they are extremely good. I knew they could do it. The children seemed to thoroughly enjoy it."

The second song, penned by Sheila Wilson, is called Children Want Peace and the last lines read: "Children just want peace, Don't give us war, Give us a future that's safe and secure."

Dorothy Walton said: "The children have practised so hard and they have absolutely loved doing it. They sang their hearts out.

"We are hoping parents will buy copies to start with, but hopefully it will be sold on a larger scale as it will be available over the Internet."

Gloria Gott, who has been head teacher at St John's for 17 years, admitted she was moved to tears by the children's singing.

"We can't compete with S Club 7 but this song is about trying to make our world as safe a place for the children as we can, in troubled times," she said.

Initially, 5,000 copies of the CD will be made, and Mr Coulter plans to market it extensively nationwide as well as trying to get radio airplay.

The CD will cost £3.99 and £1 from the sale of each one will go to charity, 50p to Children in Need and 50p to Unicef. It will be available in selected local shops, by mail order and for people who want to buy online. Details will be published later.
