Bradford Park Avenue 2, Emley 1 - An injury time winner from two goal hero Dean Calcutt last night earned Park Avenue a memorable victory over near neighbours Emley and lifted them out of the bottom three in the UniBond Premier Division.
The first ever league meeting between the two West Yorkshire rivals was a nip and tuck affair and when the visitors snatched the lead with less than 20 minutes to go the pressure was on Avenue.
But they battled back in tremendous fashion and earned their rise out of the relegation places.
In a game dominated by the defences to the extent that Avenue's James Stansfield and the visitors' Paul David turned in tremendous man of the match displays in their centre back roles, it was the route one approach that hauled the home side out of trouble.
Almost 90 seconds of stoppage time had elapsed when Avenue keeper Craig Dootson launched a clearance the length of the field and found Calcutt in space. He made no mistake despite a hefty challenge from Emley goalkeeper Paul Cuss.
Had Calcutt's effort not run into the net Cuss could well have found himself in hot water with the referee because he fouled the Avenue player in a desperate attempt to prevent the shot going in.
There had been little more than half chances at both ends before Emley took the lead in the 72nd minute. A long ball out of their defence reached the half way line and Gary Hatto broke down the left flank.
His high cross to the far side of the area cut out Avenue's defence and fell to Darren Day who was unmarked level with the far post. He rifled an eight yard shot into the roof of the net.
The visitors' lead lasted just ten minutes as Avenue bounced back in positive manner. A flick on by striker Wael Nazha was met by Calcutt, who had timed his run to perfection to beat the offside trap, and he curled a shot round Cuss.
The enigmatic Calcutt then earned Avenue only their second league win of the season when two defenders and Cuss failed to anticipate the bounce on Dootson's punt forward.
With bottom club Hyde United losing on Monday and Frickley Athletic gaining only a draw at Blyth Spartans the following day, Avenue's three points from last night lifted them two places up the table, just one point behind Whitby Town who are in 19th spot.
