A grieving mother has spoken of her disgust after thieves broke into her car and stole treasured belongings - while she visited her son's grave.

The items stolen included a watch that belonged to her late son.

Julie Burnham, 45, buried her son, Daniel Wint, a week ago. The 23-year-old died after the stolen motorbike he was riding crashed into a car in Undercliffe.

The theft occurred as Miss Burnham was visiting Daniel's grave in Undercliffe cemetery for the first time since his funeral.

She said: "I was crying and really upset. I was with a friend and I left my car in view, then went to see the grave.

"I had been too upset to go before but I thought I should see it.

"I left the car for only a few minutes as I went over to Daniel's grave. It was covered in flowers because he died so young. I was really emotional and sobbing."

Miss Burnham said another mourner at the cemetery alerted her to the break-in.

"I couldn't believe it and raced over," she said.

"My handbag containing a watch and jewellery was gone, along with about £180, but what I couldn't believe was that a watch was stolen that belonged to Daniel. It was given to him by his late stepfather."

Miss Burnham, who runs a caf in Peel Park, said she did not care about the material value of the black and gold faced Rolex watch, but the fact that it had belonged to her son had left her broken-hearted.

"It is the sentiment that was attached to it. What kind of scum can do that? I was devastated after losing Daniel and sobbing my eyes out in the cemetery, and someone is sick enough to take advantage of that. It is beyond belief," she said.

The Rolex, valued at about £2,000, was passed down to Miss Burnham's son at the age of 13 from his stepfather, who died of a diabetes-related condition in 1997.

Miss Burnham said: "It is like robbing the dead. It is absolutely appalling."

She added that she was willing to buy back the watch if anyone had bought it and not realised it was stolen.

"I will pay to get it back," she said. "The other things, the jewellery, money and my watch, I don't care about. I am not grieving for items.

"It was bad enough losing Daniel but losing Daniel's memories too is too much to bear."

Miss Burnham said Daniel had been in trouble with the police before but said she did not know that the bike he had been riding was stolen.

"I have heard rumours that the bike was stolen but I have not been told anything concrete by the police. At the end of the day he lost his life," she said.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Clearly this is very distressing for Daniel's mum. We appeal to anyone who knows who might be responsible or anyone who has been passed on property matching the description to contact Bradford North Police on (01274) 376059."

Daniel Wint died after the stolen motorbike he was riding crashed into a car at Undercliffe Lane.

An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned.
