Bradford Metropolitan Engineers Department yesterday took the first step towards putting out an acridly smoking fire, which has been belching from the ground at Abb Scott Lane allotments at Low Moor since the middle of the long, hot summer. Underneath the soil there is a mixture of shale and coal and spontaneous combustion during the hot weather probably started the fire.
