A Bradford warfare expert today warned of the potential of lethal designer diseases being launched by terrorists.
University of Bradford Professor Malcolm Dando, a world-leading authority on biological and chemical warfare, claims hi-tech terrorists may one day be able to implant a deadly virus into the genetic code of individuals.
Prof Dando, writing in a scientific journal with American scientist Claire Fraser, warned that our knowledge of DNA could be put to more sinister uses.
"There is an increasing concern within both the scientific and security communities that the ongoing revolution in biology has great potential to be misused in offensive biological weapons programmes. In light of September 11, we can no longer afford to be complacent about the possibility of biological terrorism.''
