West Bowling continued their remarkable start to the National Conference Division One campaign with a solid 24-15 success against bottom-of-the-table Eastmoor Dragons at Bankfoot CC.

Bowling survived an early scare when visiting wingman Reece Dixon was hauled down after racing clear.

A penetrating 40/20 kick gave Bowling the feed at a scum on the Eastmoor twenty and centre Martin Tordoff finished off by making the overlap count to cross in the corner.

When the Dragons were caught offside wingman Lee Innes kicked two penalties to open up an 8-0 gap.

West's scrum-half Steven Illingworth took control and on the last tackle produced a precision kick over the defence to speedy wingman Carl Harrison who coasted in behind the sticks.

Eastmoor stand-off Johnny Hirst got their effort underway with a penalty and a drop goal to close the half 14-3.

Slack Bowling marking on the re-start gave Dixon a cake walk into the corner but the mercurial Illingworth backed up a Glenn Barraclough break on the short side to cross.

Hirst was on target with a further penalty for the visitors but the introduction of former Clayton halfback Adam Mitchell from the bench immediately bore fruit. He side-stepped his way clear to put Simon Owen on a run to the line. The loose forward was tackled inches short but when the visitors prevented the play the ball Barraclough took a quick tap to score. Innes added the extras for a 24-9 advantage.

Eastmoor to their credit refused to throw in the towel and centre James Ganley had the last word with a converted try at the end.

A better second-half performance was not enough to save Dudley Hill from a 38-18 defeat at Askam. They were 16-0 behind at the break and that soon became 20-0.

Chris Walsh, Neil Shoesmith and Jamie Brentley scored tries, all converted by Tony Williams to narrow the gap to 20-18.

But the home side recovered to prevent a tremendous fightback, adding three more converted tries.

In Division Two,

Keighley Albion travelled to Cumbria to be beaten by Millom 30-10.

Millom were relegated from Division 1 last season and were too much for Albion who are still looking for their first win of the season.

On a wet, heavy pitch Albion started the better of the two teams with Kris Kirk and Sam Broadley making good runs into the home side's 22 area.

Millom were first on the scoreboard when a break by David Thompson saw him send Andrew Walker in for a try, Paul Evans converting the goal.

The Keighley side then had a period of play that saw them pen Millom in their own 22 area and this led to Sam Broadley forcing his way over for a well taken try - though the goal attempt was wide of the mark.

Millom hit back as they took play back into Albion's half and good play by Graham Lupton saw Paul Wilson score a try by the posts, Paul Evans adding the goal to give a score line of Millom 12-4 on 23 minutes.

Both teams were trying to play open rugby on the rain-soaked pitch. But with the visitors under pressure they gave away an interception to Paul Evans who went all of 80 metres to score wide out.

Then to make matters worse Albion in their own 22 sent out a wild pass that was again intercepted by Paul Evans who went all the way to score another fortuitous try, taking the score to 20-4 at half time.

Albion were caught cold from the kick off as Millom drove down field in a move that saw Hooker Colin Thompson score under the posts in the first minute.

Millom's centre David Thompson scored a good individual try in the 60th minute.

But Albion were looking the stronger of the two sides and good work by Chris Hogg and Mark Adams saw Neil Jordan dive over for a well-deserved try by the posts.

Albion put the pressure back on but it was not going to be their day as the clock wound down.
