HOW many more people are going to be killed or injured on the Manor Park Bends before something is done to stop the sickening parade of accidents?

Every motorist or passenger must now experience a feeling of dread as they approach the area, unsure if around the next corner an out of control vehicle is going to slam head-on into them at high speed.

The bargain-basement price casualty reduction scheme of larger signs and brightly coloured carriageway clearly has not solved the problem. So what is the next step?

For one thing, there has been a distinct lack of maintenance of the area with street lights still out and hedges not cut down to improve sight lines.

Are we seeing a loss of interest by the Highways Agency because responsibility for the road is due to be handed over to Bradford Council within the next 18 months?

Around £7 million may have been saved by the Government by shelving the bypass scheme but how much more has it cost to clear up after the constant succession of accidents on the road, not to mention the human price that has been paid?

No-one seems able to pin down exactly what makes the area so dangerous but all are agreed that as a short-term measure, the speed limit needs to be drastically reduced and rigorously enforced.

And the so-called environmental campaigners who vociferously opposed the bypass scheme when it was mooted last time - on the absurd grounds that it was part of the Government's sinister plan for a 'secret motorway' across the Pennines - should try to keep a check on their conspiracy fantasies if there is a chance of the plan being resurrected.

There is only one effective solution - a bypass - and if enough people can get behind it, there may be a chance of success.
