Bradford City were today trying to persuade Juanjo to bring a dash of Spanish flair to Valley Parade.
Jim Jefferies and chairman Geoffrey Richmond were due to meet the Hearts winger and his agent, hoping to reunite him with the manager who took him to Scotland three years ago.
Jefferies would like to team up the 24-year-old right winger with Matt Etherington, the wideman City have recruited on a month's loan from Tottenham.
But he admits there will be competition for Juanjo's signature.
Jefferies said: "There are no guarantees because Juanjo has got two or three other options. But his agent has said he would like to hear what we've got to say.
"We were just waiting for a convenient time to set up a meeting and take it from there. But I think he will do that with two or three other clubs so it is not definite that he's going to join Bradford."
Juanjo, who joined Hearts from Barcelona, has been on a monthly contract since refusing a new deal in the summer.
But his pacy skills have made him popular with Hearts fans and a link-up with Etherington, who made such an impact in the closing stages at Millwall, would give City much-needed speed on both wings.
Jefferies said: "If I can find a couple more players like Matt with a bit of pace who know what they are doing, it would be a big boost for the squad.
"You can't ask for any more effort from the players at the moment or the quality of their build-up play and passing on Tuesday. What you are hoping is that you put the ball in the net - we had umpteen chances and scored one while Millwall probably had a handful and got three.
"I just can't believe we keep losing some of these games. We must have broken a few mirrors somewhere.
"But I would feel a lot worse if we weren't playing well. Apart from Watford in the Worthington Cup which was dreadful, I believe the worst performance in the last six was Grimsby which we won."
Chairman Geoffrey Richmond said his "fingers were crossed" that Jefferies could turn things round.
He said: "We've now got Watford on Saturday, Wimbledon on Tuesday and then Crewe next Friday, and the world could look a very different place by then, or it could look a lot worse."
