THE Wharfedale FA Airedale International Challenge Cup first round matches were played on Saturday and sprung few surprises.

Cup holders Horsforth St Margaret's were again far too physical for Guiseley Reserves to handle. Bad challenges were allowed to go unpunished and Guiseley soon had Craig Bower a passenger after a diabolical tackle. Guiseley skipper Ben Thackwray had his nose broken when he was kicked in the face by a head high challenge which again went unpunished and this set the pattern for the game.

There can however be no denying the quality of the goals Saints scored through Richard Ramsden (2) and Denis Metcalfe. Guiseley spurned their chances and were not up to the physical challenge.

Otley Town hammered Ilkley AFC 7-1 with strikes from Lee Grice (2), Dominique Blair (2), James Firth, Joe Lunn and Richard Langhorn. Richard Giles scored Ilkley's consolation.

Yew Tree went down 5-2 at home to Baildon Trinity Athletic. Danny Jowett, Daniel Steel, Nick James, Paul Clarke and Darren Thornton were on target for Trinity and Ben Kelly and Stuart Thompson for Yew Tree.

Ventus Yeadon Celtic beat Menston Rangers 6-4 with Terry Hargreaves netting four and Carl Roberts two. For Rangers scorers were Harry Bond, Craig George, Richard Metcalfe and Roger Turnbull.

Pool had a 5-0 win over Park Row Associates with goals from Shaun Joyce (2), Gerard Stubbs, Matthew Healey and James Ramsey.

Addingham defeated Salts Old Boys 6-3 in a game that went to extra-time. Jamie Barrow netted a hat-trick while Damien Smithson (2) and Richard Mills scored the others for Addingham. Salts goals came Andrew Stocks.

Bramhope went down 5-1 at home to Rawdon Old Boys with David Brindle netting their goal.
