A former Bradford boss who helped build up Pudsey-based Green Flag breakdown company has died suddenly in London, aged 55.

Ernest Smith joined the company in 1973 as technical director and became Group Managing Director in 1982.

He was named Britain's Boss of the Year in 1995 after being nominated by his secretary, who was impressed with his down-to-earth approach to business. He left the company five years ago.

On hearing of Mr Smith's death, Tony Dunlop, Director of Green Flag Motoring Assistance, said: "It was with much sadness that we heard of the death of Ernest Smith.

"Ernest was the man who built National Breakdown from a small Bradford-based recovery company into an internationally known assistance company which we now know as Green Flag Motoring Assistance. He will be sadly missed."
