Murder detectives were today following up dozens of leads from the public over the cold blooded slaying of a Bradford taxi driver.

Officers investigating the shooting of father-of-four Mohammed Basharat said they had received a "very pleasing" response since appealing for information in the Telegraph & Argus.

Among tip-offs given to the incident room were possible nick-names and sightings of two men wanted for questioning in connection with killing.

It is believed the 33-year-old's brutal murder could have been a revenge attack for an earlier road rage confrontation. Shortly after 8pm on Saturday a masked gunman walked into the Little Horton Private Hire office at Holme Top and blasted Mr Basharat twice in the head in front of colleagues.

Police revealed that the day before, he had been involved in a minor accident with a hired Renault Clio containing two Afro-Caribbean men close to the Park Road office where he died.

The incident ended with the driver shouting at Mr Basharat, from Heaton, that he "didn't know who he was messing with" and that he would kill him.

Since the murder the police investigation has centred on a block of four houses in Greaves Street - around 500 metres from the crime scene - where two Afro-Caribbean men had previously lived. Officers said the pair had left "in a hurry" before a search of the houses, which recovered crack cocaine, cannabis, personal belongings and documents, was carried out.

Det Sgt Colin Stansbie, from the murder incident room, said: "We have had a very pleasing response from the public since launching our appeal for information."

More than 20 people had spoken to officers with information concerning the two men, such as giving possible nick-names and descriptions of cars which they had been seen in.

The names of the men are still not known but it is clear they were living in the Greaves Street properties before Saturday's shooting.

However, the detective sergeant said no other witnesses to the shooting or the events immediately afterwards had come forward.

A dedicated team of 25 officers were today following up the leads on all information received.

Police are still hunting for the gun used to murder Mr Basharat - possibly a revolver-style gas powered gun adapted to fire .38 calibre bullets - which partially exploded in the killer's hands before he fled the scene.

"It is very important that anyone who knows anything about this incident or has information about these men or their current whereabouts contacts us immediately," said DS Stansbie.

Anyone with information should call the incident room on 0800 318001.
