SHAMROCKS dumped Keighley Cup kings Phoenix out of the competition at the first hurdle.

After coming close in previous seasons Shammies pulled off the shock of the competition with a 5-1 victory. Former Phoenix striker Paul Driver piled on the agony for his old club as he chipped in with two goals.

Keighley shamrocks started brightly and were rewarded with a penalty, but Joe Brady's spot kick was saved by Paul Linyard. Despite the setback Shamrocks took the lead as Brady put a slide rule pass through to Steve Duckworth who smashed the ball into the net.

Phoenix battled to get back into the game, but the solid Shamrocks defence held firm with Dave Varley making a splendid near-post save just before the break.

Shamrocks continued to dominate and went 2-0 with Brady supplying Paul Driver who had time to pick his spot. Substitute Howard Wellwood scored after another good move from midfield to leave Phoenix looking shell-shocked.

Driver got his second after his 20-yard shot hit the keeper and spun into the net. Substitute Adam Burns used his fresh legs to race round the keeper to make it 5-0 with the late Phoenix goal doing little to dampen the Shamrock's celebrations.

Cowling booked their place in the second round with a 3-1 victory over Keighley Lifts.

John McCamon missed an open goal early in the game by Alasdair McEwan made amends. Midway through the second half Cowling got their reward for enterprising football when McCamon's speculative cross went stright through the keeper's hands.

Lifts pressed again and were rewarded with a goal, but any hope it gave was soon extinguished as Jimmy Anson's brave header connected with a superb Liam Marsh cross to take Cowling through.
