ATHLETES continued the district's race to the top with both the Bingley Harriers and the Keighley & Craven club tasting success at the weekend.

A team from the Bingley club continued their domination of the fell racing scene by winning the Fell Runners Association Relay Championships with a stunning performance in the mountains of north Wales.

Teams from the keighley & Craven Athletics Club also won the Ladies and Under-17 races in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League, while the senior men took second place.

The Keighley & Craven men also won the Yorkshire 10k Road Race Champ-

ionships.

Bingley's victory came in the fell relay event which is held in a different area each year. The local team have taken the title four times in the event's 12-year history.

The first leg runner, Chris Cariss, -- who recently won the Manchester Marathon -- put the team in a solid fourth place. The second long distance leg, which is run in pairs, was attacked by Rob Jebb and Andy Peace (above) who set an flying pace to take t6he lead by approximately one minute.

The third leg, which is also completed by a pair of runners, involves orienteering-style navigation with John Taylor and Robin Lawrence working well to increase Bingley's lead.

British fell running champion Ian Holmes was given the task of bringing them to victory on the final solo leg.

Altringham were runners-up with Cumberland Fell Runners third and local rivals Pudsey and Bramley in fourth place.

Keighley & Craven Ladies team took first place in the cross country competition with Jo Prowse setting the pace in the first leg, handing over to Liz Tomes and Debbie Spurr with Catt Fawcett on the anchor leg.

Helen Glover was second in the Under-17s ladies race and helped the team of Laura Greenham, Kaisleigh Greenham, Nichola Leng and Rachel Hanson to first place.

The road race champions were Zip Jones, Liam Spencer and Will Smith.
