A witness who gave evidence against two drive-by gunmen is believed to have been shot from a car as he walked down the street.

Jamie George, who testified at the trial over a shooting at Bradford's Planet Venus nightclub, is thought to have been blasted with a shotgun close to his house in Moortown, Leeds.

The 22-year-old was not seriously injured and is thought to have run to safety.

He was later released from hospital after receiving treatment for his wounds.

Mr George had appeared for the prosecution in the trial of Khawar Butt and Dean Carden which was held at Leeds Crown Court this month.

Butt, 22, of Sandford Road, Bradford, was jailed for 12 years after being found guilty of two counts of malicious wounding with intent and one of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Carden, 22, of Moortown, Leeds, received nine years after admitting identical charges.

The court heard how the pair had laid in wait outside the club and blasted 17-year-old Gemma Tuohey and Dane Barratt, 19, from a car when they emerged in the early hours of the morning.

Shortly beforehand, when Mr George, 22, had left Planet Venus alone, Butt had chased him down the road with an axe, narrowly missing him as he hurled it.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police were called to a reported shooting in the Moortown area of Leeds at 9.52pm on Thursday. A man was found with injuries to his back and legs which are believed to have been from a shotgun."

It is believed the shot was fired from a T-registered black Volkswagen Golf which sped from the scene afterwards.

The spokesman added: "The man was taken to hospital for observation.

"He was treated for minor injuries and has since been discharged."
