TALENTED teenager Alex Good from Otley has been named Yorkshire's young sailor of the year.
Alex, 16, a pupil of Prince Henry's Grammar School, will find out later this month whether he has made the short list for the national title.
And if he is one of the last three chosen, he will be off to the British Nautical Awards ceremony for winners - hailed as the Oscars of the boat world - held at the Boat Show Ball in London in January.
Alex has been sailing Toppers since nine years old and has been seriously competing for the last three years.
He started with Otley Sailing Club and then moved on to Ripon Sailing Club.
He said: "I am absolutely delighted to have won this award. It has been a very hectic year with me with some great successes and to be awarded the young sailor of the year for the Yorkshire and Humberside region as well is just fantastic."
His mum, Christine Good, said his family was very proud.
"I'm not sure what he wants to do, but he'll always want to do sailing. He's certainly done very well and we're very pleased with him," she said.
At the moment, most of Alex's weekends are taken up either training or competing all over the country.
Mrs Good said: "He doesn't know how much further he's going to get, he's just really pleased to have got this far."
The British Nautical Awards in conjunction with the Yachting Journalists' Association are presented every year. Nominations are received from 12 regions across the country and a shortlist of three for each of the 11 categories chosen by the YHA committee with advice from the RYA and MDL.
The shortlist will be announced on November 27.
