Queensbury moved to within two points of Premier Division leaders Ovenden after a cracking 14-8 success against fellow title-contenders Park Amateurs at HillTop.

Bury opened the scoring when scrum-half Carl Smith hoisted a 'bomb' on the last tackle and the bounce favoured centre Trevor Stead who raced over.

Queensbury wingman Mark Gay showed he has lost none of his pace after his long lay off when he steamed in from 30 metres. But the Halifax side refused to lie down and a long-range converted try levelled the scores.

In the dying minutes of the first half Bury's teenage stand-off Tom Middleton scored a penalty to close the half 10-8.

After the break Smith and Middleton posted further penalties to see Bury home. Bury hooker Lee Burnett deserved the man-of-the-match award.

Clayton fell to second from bottom after their 16-32 defeat to Westgate Redoubt. Clayton's Danny Murgatroyd and Craig Pickthall scored tries and they ended the first half 16-8.

Clayton-centre Adam Thomas, aged 16, scored a fine try and there was a typical prop's effort from Mark Anderson.

But Clayton conceded two interception tries, which ended the contest.

Birkenshaw bagged their second league win when they beat Underbank Rangers 30-26 at home.

Birky looked to be coasting with a 16-6 half-time lead thanks to two fine efforts from debutant-wingman Owen Buckley plus a scorching 90-metre special from full-back Morton Robinson.

But they went to sleep in the second half and ended up trailing 16-18. Second-row forward Paul Bancroft steadied the ship with a try and Robinson produced another breaking run from halfway to glide over. Stand-off Matt Gowland kicked four goals.

West Bowling A got back to winning ways with a 50-4 away win at Emley Moor. Former-Hunslet prop-forward Steve Pryce returned to the amateur ranks to inspire a new-look Bowling to victory. Steve Gregory (4), James Dewhirst (3), Jason Woolham, Shah Basha, Bob Benn and Lee Hunter made up the eleven-try total.

Division Two title-favourites Victoria Rangers over ran Dudley Hill Eagles 86-6 on their visit to Parry Lane. The young Eagles were unlucky to meet a Rangers side on the top of their form and the 17 tries were scored by Mick Faulding (4), John Beanland (3), Sam Bentley (2), Tony Fretwell (2) and Phil Helliwell (2).

Odsal Sedbergh came within a whisker of pulling off the shock of the day at home to Halifax Irish. Odsal led the table toppers 15-14 with eight minutes left to play but a late burst from the Irish saw them edged out 15-26. Les Sellers Jnr was outstanding for Sedbergh and did not deserve to lose.

Queensbury A made a lively start at Todmorden and fully deserved their 10-4 interval lead with a tries from wingman Paul Skelton and hooker Steve Gallagher.

The second half proved fruitless for the depleted Bury side.

A scoring error by the referee meant disappointment for Thornton. Players were told the score was level with ten minutes to go in their away match against Littleborough. Winger Chris Ryan had scored two tries and Daniel Charles-Tynewell had grabbed one.

But after Thornton Captain Ellerton dropped a goal the referee told players the he had wrongly added up the scores and they had in fact lost 16-15.
