IF Ilkley Parish Council goes ahead and levies a small general rate, the money raised will be used to help local causes.

This was the message from Coun Michael Gibbons, parish council chairman, at the revived annual Civic Dinner, held at the King's Hall and Winter Gardens last Friday.

The parish council is being urged to take on more responsibility and could actually asume some of the roles presently served by Bradford Council.

It has never levied a rate and because it would be a big step for the council to take, members have been proceeding cautiously. Coun Gibbons and his vice-chairman, Coun Heathcliffe Bowen, have been involved in discussions with Bradford Council and they will serve an extra year in office to try to ensure that any changeover goes ahead smoothly.

Forecasting a precept of around £3.50 per person, Coun Gibbons told the gathering that it would be 'wonderful' for the parish council to provide positive support to local projects.

"For the first time ever, we can give something to you," he said. "A lot of groups will benefit."

About 200 guests joined civic leaders for the occasion. Guest speakers were the Rev James Turnbull, former Coroner for the Bradford District, and Brian Close, the former Yorkshire and England cricketer.

Musical entertainment was provided by the Dave Challis Jazz Quartet and surplus proceeds from the dinner will go to the Friends of Kings Hall, who are raising money to refurbish the hall itself.

Coun Gibbons said: "I should like to thank those who generously gave raffle prizes, made a donation, or helped in any way towards the event.
