THE ILLUMINATION of a Pool-in-Wharfedale housing estate is not proving popular with the residents, a councillor has claimed.

Leeds City Council plans to put up 16 new street lamps to add extra light to the streets of the Park Estate.

But while some residents are pleased, ward councillor Clive Fox (Con, Otley and Wharfedale) says others are less than enthusiastic.

Coun Fox said that several residents had expressed concerns about light pollution.

He said: "A couple of households have indicated they are pleased they will finally be getting street lighting.

"But several others are concerned at light pollution and its effect on the rural character of the estate. Some had pointed out that many houses have sensor lights already so there is no real need for it."

Coun Fox said the council had told him the policy was to install new lights as these would benefit visitors, if not the residents themselves.

New lights are also expected in Otley on the footpath from Bondgate to Myers Croft. Coun Fox said these will be appreciated by elderly residents, who may feel safer using the short cut to the town centre.
