LOCAL riders competed in the British Schools' Cycling Association National Hill Climb Championships which took place on a wet and foggy Oliver's Mount Circuit in Scarborough.
In the under-10s event Otley's Oliver Webster, representing St Joseph's RC Primary School, continued the impressive form which saw him win the Yorkshire Schools' title several weeks earlier.
In his first attempt at a British Schools' event, Oliver completed the undulating 1000-metre course in 2 minutes 54 seconds to gain a commendable fourth place.
Another Yorkshire Schools winner, Scott Thwaites of Burley-in-Wharfedale (pictured above), represented Ermysted-s Grammar School, Skipton, in the under-12 event.
This age group used the senior course that involved a twisting climb of 800 metres, including sections of 1 in 6.
Despite some concerns about inappropriate gearing during the warm up climb, Scott rode strongly through the steep sections to finish in a time of 3 minutes 37 seconds to claim the bronze medal.
Mark Thwaites was ruing the fact that his birthday fell four days before the qualifying date for the under-14 race and was therefore the youngest competitor in the under-16 event.
Nevertheless, he rode well to finish in 3 minutes 21 seconds, a time good enough to secure a podium position as an under 14, but only 9th as an under 16.
