Bradford City defender David Wetherall is having talks with First Division rivals Manchester City today over a possible £1 million-plus move.
Reports from Maine Road suggest that terms have been agreed between the clubs and the 30-year-old player and that the transfer will go ahead if Wetherall passes a medical today.
City manager Jim Jefferies reveal-ed that Blues boss Kevin Keegan targeted Wetherall after his proposed switch to Southampton broke down.
Jefferies said: "When David's move to Southampton fell through this week Manchester City made an inquiry.
"David said he wanted to speak to them and that is what he is doing today, but it is a long way from being a done deal."
Some reports suggest that Keegan's club are willing to pay £1.5 million, but the fee is more likely to be about the £1.25 million mark.
That was the figure suggested when Wetherall had talks with Southampton manager, his former Leeds United team-mate Gordon Strachan.
Rumours on the south coast suggested that Southampton were worried about Wetherall's recent injury record and that factor put them off offering a long term deal.
Wetherall, who joined City from Leeds for £1.4 million in June 1999 was their first major signing after winning a place in the Premiership.
He was an ever present as they survived in their first season in the top flight by beating Liverpool with a dramatic 1-0 win in the last match of the campaign and his consistency played a big part in City avoiding relegation.
However, he had two lengthy spells out of action last season with groin trouble, missing 20 league matches in total.
This season Wetherall has again been hit by injury but Keegan is keen to bolster a defence that has leaked 26 goals in 17 games. That has hampered the Mancunians' efforts to make an instant return to the Premiership.
