Pupils at Greenhead High School, Keighley, could soon be swapping their cans of fizzy drinks for bottles of water.
The school is looking to take part in an experiment to see if the type of drinks consumed by students has an effect on their academic performance.
As part of the test, students will be provided with a bottle which they will be able to fill up with water and drink from throughout the day.
The aim is to see if drinking water, as opposed to carbonated drinks with food additives and preservatives, improves levels of performance and concentration.
Senior teacher Marilyn Boyd said: "We are trying to move students away from fizzy drinks, and as part of the experiment students will enter into a contract and agree not to consume fizzy drinks.
"They will be able to buy a plastic bottle for 20p, which they will be able to fill up with water at appropriate times and then drink throughout the day.
"We will then analyse whether it has made any difference in performance for those selected."
She added: "Many students don't have a drink from morning until they get home, which is something we want to address." Mrs Boyd said that the initiative -- which is being carried out in other schools across the Bradford authority -- is still in the planning stages.
