Skipton has beaten Bradford and Keighley to be named the 100th host of a Race for Life event.

Organisers are awaiting for final confirmation from the police, but if the race goes ahead the town will be the smallest venue in the country to stage the annual event for women. Organisers thought its picturesque setting and community spirit would make it an ideal place.

The five-kilometre race to raise money for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund attracts thousands of women every year and this year 160,000 runners raised £6.5 million.

Skipton was chosen partly thanks to staff from Skipton Building Society who last year entered the largest team in the Leeds race. Organiser Dave Martin said he was overwhelmed by the support of SBS and he hoped other local women would want to follow in their footsteps.

He hopes at least 1,000 Craveners will don trainers and Race for Life T-shirts and join in the fun run, which is likely to start in Aireville Park and be held in mid-July. The day begins with a warm-up and a minute's silence for the runners to reflect on why they are taking part.

Race for Life was introduced in 1994 as an opportunity for women to remember loved ones touched by cancer, celebrate life and raise money for research into cancers that affect women. It is open to all women of all ages and fitness abilities and in the past has attracted everyone from professional runners to those who have never run a race before.
