STUDENTS are throwing their weight behind plans to make Keighley a driving force for sport -- and a blueprint for the rest of the country.

Sixth Form students at Oakbank are to carry out a comprehensive review of every sporting club, pitch and facility in the district as part of their studies.

Teenagers studying leisure and recreation as part of their Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education will be searching out every club and venue and want to know details of membership and costs among other information to get the Big Picture of sport throughout the area.

Course tutor Christine Buckley said: "The approach will help to develop a unique database for the community and will build a learning resource which will benefit all students in the area. We aim to involve all schools in the town and students will know they are making a real contribution."

The students will also be involved in planning next year's sportKarnival which will be held on June 16, 2002 as part of the Keighley Festival. They will help develop business plans and and marketing material to make the event one to remember.

The sportKarnival event is already taking shape and anyone who wants to put on a sporting or associated event, or even set up a display on the day, should contact Will Smith at Oakbank on 01535-210111.
