David Wetherall's proposed £1.5 million move to Manchester City today dramatically collapsed.
The Maine Road club released a statement this afternoon saying that the Bradford defender had failed a medical.
But Kevin Keegan's club said that the deal might be revived.
The Blues' chief operating officer Chris Bird said: "Manchester City will not be pursuing their interest in David Wetherall as the player has failed his medical. City may renew their interest in the player in the future."
It is the second time in days that the 30-year-old ex-Leeds player has failed a medical.
A test also scuppered his hopes of returning to the Premiership with Southampton.
Wetherall has been dogged by a groin injury.
The deal's collapse also means City manager Jim Jefferies will be denied the chance to use some of the transfer cash to strengthen his sqaud.
Before the deal was called off, Jefferies told the Telegraph & Argus: "We would be sorry to see David go. He's been a terrific player to work with.
"I'm sure part of the money we receive from his transfer will be available to bring in two or three players to strengthen the squad.
"I must stress David is under no pressure to go and if he stays we just get on with it and work away. It is his decision."
Meanwhile, reports in the North-east today linked Middlesbrough defender Steve Vickers with a move to Bradford.
