Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, will deliver a keynote speech about the war against Afghanistan when she visits Bradford next week.

Mrs Bhutto will be giving her first major talk about the events following the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States at the Hilton Hotel on Monday.

In Bradford for the launch of her new biography, Benazir Bhutto - Pakistan and Democracy, she is also expected to outline her thoughts about the future role of Pakistan in the 'alliance' against terrorism.

The visit was arranged by Pakistan People's Party (UK) member Arashad Barki, from Bradford, who is publishing the book.

Mrs Bhutto will also meet the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Ghazanfer Khaliq, at City Hall.

Thousands of people packed St George's Hall to greet the politician during her last visit to Bradford in June, 1999.

She then gave her first public speech since being convicted on corruption charges in her absence, and praised her 'brothers and sisters' in the city for supporting her struggle to restore democracy.

Councillor Khaliq (Lab, Bradford Moor), however, criticised her at the time for being 'vague' on policy and failing to even mention the territorial dispute over Kashmir.

Police also had to mount a huge security operation on her previous visit to Bradford in 1994.

Then the serving Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mrs Bhutto was met by a large crowd of demonstrators fighting for an independent Kashmir who were challenged by hordes of her own supporters.
