A big turnout of British fans will be hoping to cheer Silsden's Dougie Lampkin on to a seventh consecutive Embassy World Indoor Trials Championship at Sheffield Arena next month.

Lampkin, 25, captured this event for the first time in 1996 and has never looked back, claiming this prestigious title for a staggering six years in a row!

And he will be going flat out for win No 7 on Saturday, January 5 (7pm).

Those victories in Sheffield have helped inspire Lampkin because he has also gone on to win the overall World Indoor and World Outdoor trials titles for the last five years.

The Embassy event is the first round of the 2002 FIM World Indoor trials championship that will see the world's top riders compete in ten events in seven countries.

In Sheffield earlier this year, Lampkin was cheered all the way to victory by a sell-out crowd of 8,000 home fans.

There's more British interest as Lampkin will be joined by Steve Colley, 29, from Onchan, Isle of Man, who is seeded No 5 and has earned a wild card entry. In the 2001 event in Sheffield, Colley came home fourth.

The seven-man line-up will be completed by Marc Frexia (Spain, world No2), Marc Colomer (Spain, world No3); Takahisa Fujinami (Japan, World No6); Adam Raga (Spain, unranked) and Albert Cabestany (Spain, unranked).

Lampkin, who now lives in Douglas on the Isle of Man, knows the pressure will be on him. "This is the biggest event in the entire year for me by a long way, so perhaps you can understand just how important it is for me to want to win it again," he said.

"The previous six wins will always be a part of history but now all that is important is to make sure I continue that run at Sheffield 2002.

"The pressure is always immense but, then, again, so is the support from the capacity crowd - the last thing I want to do is disappoint them. I feel totally focused and determined and I am desperate to record yet another victory in front of my home fans."

Colley said: "I am delighted to have been invited back to Sheffield as a wild card entry after failing to gain automatic qualification through last season's rankings. I am training really hard and, hopefully, I can start the season with a win. Dougie is the man to beat but it might just be my night."

World Indoor Trials events always provide great entertainment. The centrepiece of the Sheffield course will be a huge indoor waterfall.

In the first round, each rider is allowed eight minutes to complete the course before incurring penalty points and the eventual winner is the rider who completes the course with the lowest points total.

Promoter Neil Crosswaite, from Avondale Management, said: "It's amazing just how big this event has become in the sporting calendar. And far from just being recognised within the motorcycle world, the support from Embassy has helped turn it into a truly international event that continues to attract more and more mainstream interest."

The championship is certain to be a sell-out and there are only a few tickets remaining. Tickets (£22 for adults and £14 for under-14s) can be obtained from the Sheffield Arena Box Office (tel: 0114 2565656).
